Overview
St. Macartan’s Parish Primary School aspires to provide a challenging and motivating curriculum that builds on students’ knowledge and understanding of themselves and the world around them. Consistent with our Catholic ethos, our curriculum aims to develop the whole child, preparing them to take their place in a rapidly changing world. Our learning environment captures our beautiful native school grounds and allows for students to engage in flexible indoor and outdoor learning spaces.
Using a learner-centred approach to learning, all learners are encouraged to:
- Be engaged with learning and the life of the school
- Take responsibility for his/her own learning and behaviour
- Show independence in, and have control over, his/her own learning
- Enjoy confidence in oneself as a learner
- Display maturity in all relationships, marked by mutual respect
As with all Victorian Catholic schools and government schools, the curriculum is implemented at St. Macartan’s through the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority Framework. This framework facilitates the concept of personalised learning programs for all students, where the curriculum is planned in relation to the actual level of each student. This framework is designed to achieve:
- a solid foundation in knowledge, understanding, skills and values on which further learning and adult life can be built
- deep knowledge, understanding, skills and values that will enable advanced learning and an ability to create new ideas and translate them into practical applications
- general capabilities that underpin flexible and analytical thinking, a capacity to work with others and an ability to move across subject disciplines to develop new expertise.
The Victorian Curriculum covers these 12 learning areas:
- English
- Mathematics
- Sciences (including Physics, Chemistry, Biology)
- Humanities (History, Geography, Economics, Civics and Citizenship)
- The Arts (Performing and Visual)
- Critical and Creative Thinking
- Ethical Capability
- Intercultural Capability
- Personal and Social Capability
