The wellbeing of students, staff and families is paramount to everything we do at St. Macartan's Parish Primary School. Gospel Values are embedded in all aspects of Wellbeing and are shown through trust, honesty and compassion for each and every person. We value the uniqueness, potential and diversity of all members in our community. We ensure a fair go for all through wellbeing processes such as, Parent Support Group meetings, Individual Learning Plans and our Social and Emotional Learning Programs.

Our Behaviour Support Policy and procedures enable students, teachers and parents to be empowered to make responsible decisions. These decisions continue to support and develop safe, consistent and secure learning environments, promoting an equal and fair approach to learning for all, where we all strive to do our best. We are a Whole School Approach to Positive Behaviour School and so our expectations for student behaviour for all of our students is SMILE: Speak appropriately, Move safely, Listen to the speaker, I look after myself and others, Everyone follows directions.

Programs implemented to support Social and Emotional Learning include:

St. Macartan’s school provides a supportive environment that promotes the wellbeing of all members of the school community including students, teachers, parents and community members. Parents have the opportunity to be involved in a range of activities which are vital to the sense of belonging to the school:

Lunchtime clubs

A number of lunchtime clubs run throughout the year to enable students to explore their interests, meet other children and have support through structured play.

Pop Up Play: Pop Up Play sessions where younger students are supported to play together cohesively through a series of games and activities which change weekly.

Garden Club: Students are able to participate in Gardening Club during lunchtime where they assist in activities in the school’s kitchen garden and are trained in all aspects of horticulture from seed raising and propagation to composting and animal husbandry. Our Garden Club members also propagate plants for our school grounds and swales.

Buddy Program

All Prep children buddy up with a Year 6 student.

During the year a special relationship is established between the Prep and Year 6 buddy. The growth in each child’s friendship skills, sense of belonging and communication is outstanding as they spend time sharing and learning from one another. Buddies participate in fun activities such as reading and writing together, information technology skills, art activities and science experiments. We are always very proud of our Year 6 students who take great care of their buddy and all the Prep children.

All Year 6 children have a staff member buddy. This connection assists in demonstrating leadership, providing a support person and strengthen the connectedness of staff and children. Special times are shared together at regular morning teas, birthdays, sacraments and graduation as well as through the year, ensuring that the Year 6 students have a ‘go to’ person.

Child Safe Standards

Catholic schools have a responsibility to create nurturing school environments where children and young people are respected, their voices are heard and where they are safe and feel safe. Proactive approaches across policies, procedures, curriculum and practices have been developed to promote a child-safe school environment.

Parent Support Groups (PSGs)

Schools who have identified children with diverse learning needs, encourage effective communication between home and school at PSG meetings. Individual Learning Plans are developed through a process of planning and documenting 'where to next' for the child.
